Cannabutter Explained, Effects and Recipes

Sweet Grass Kitchen was born out of a desire to bring unique comfort food to cannabis consumers. We started baking modern takes on classic favorites in Colorado over a decade ago with Cannabutter as our star ingredient. Cannabutter helps us achieve our company purpose “to make life sweeter” and we are thrilled to offer this perfectly dosed stick for everyone to enjoy!

To help you get excited about our Cannabutter, we describe exactly what it is, how it’s made, and the effects. We also share some of our favorite Cannabutter recipes so you can be a home canna-chef!

What is Cannabutter?

Cannabutter is THC-infused butter. Butter is a dairy product that contains a lot of saturated fats. Because of the saturated fat, the butter has many sites for THC to latch onto compared to monounsaturated fats, such as olive oil.

Sweet Grass Kitchen Cannabutter sticks contain 100mg THC each. Each stick is portioned into “pats” that are 1 tablespoon and contain 10mg THC each for easy dosing. Keep Cannabutter in the fridge or freezer; it can be kept in the freezer for up to 6 months.

Our Cannabutter won trophies at the 2019 and 2021 THC Classic and was the first infused butter to be approved by the Colorado Department of Health!

How is Cannabutter made?

1. Quality cannabis flower

At Sweet Grass Kitchen, we infuse our Cannabutter with high-quality cannabis strains that are cultivated in-house. This allows us to ensure our products are grown, tested, and cooked at the highest quality standards to guarantee consistency.

2. Decarboxylation

When making our Cannabutter, the cannabis flower is decarboxylated, which means it is heated at precise temperatures for a specific period of time. This activates the cannabinoids like THC to feel their effects.

3. Simmered and Strained

All of our flower is then gently simmered in clarified butter — which is pure butterfat — to ensure a great infusion and an even mixture of THC. Then, for the best flavor, our butter is strained three times to remove all plant matter and impurities.

What are the effects?

Since Cannabutter has a high fat content, you can count on a longer lasting body effect than cannabis oil infused edibles or when smoking cannabis. This may be because orally ingested cannabis is processed by the liver where THC is metabolized into 11-hydroxy-THC, a more potent molecule. This makes the therapeutic and psychoactive effects more powerful and longer lasting than smoking.

The reported effects of eating a Cannabutter-infused treat are body relaxation and a psychoactive cerebral euphoria. However, everyone’s body is different and so the effects may vary. It typically takes 1-2 hours to feel the effects and they may last up to 6 hours or more.

Remember to follow our golden rule: start low and go slow! This means start with a low dose and wait to see how you feel before eating more. If you eat too much, you could feel negative effects.
